Everything I Learned, I Learned in Kindergarten... and Then Re-learned as a Mom

Careers 105:  When I was little and asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer was always a veterinarian, a news anchorwoman, or the President of the United States.  For reasons made up in my little head, I thought these would be my dream jobs.

My kids have their own ideas of what they want to be when they grow up.  Their thoughts have evolved as they have grown, thank goodness.  I don't know how they would have grown up to be a dinosaur, cheetah, or a monkey and am pretty sure I wouldn't want them bringing their children to Thanksgiving dinner if that was the case.

My older kid's dream jobs have now taken on real human forms such as veterinarian, nurse, teacher, restaurant owner, policeman, rancher, and clown that paints butterflies on people's faces.  There is one very special occupation that has been popping up for some time that I am especially excited about.  I have to admit that I never really thought of it as a real job until I got much older, but I love that my kids are so much smarter than me!

The job that I speak of is that of Motherhood.  Although I always wanted to have children, I never really considered that my career choice.  I am so proud of my girls for choosing this most sought-after position among women as their dream occupation, even above a veterinarian, a news anchorwoman, and President of the United States.

So although I don't carry the official title, I am still the one that my kids bring all of their sick stuffed animals to so that I can patch them up; I am constantly sharing the news, be it the weather or current events, my family comes to me to find it out; and finally, although I may not live in Washington D.C., I do live in a white house, make, enforce, and veto the laws, decide on the budget, and figure out our healthcare system.  They call me Mom, and even though the title is different, I have become what I always dreamed of becoming.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

  2. Oh, I wanted to be an actress & pursued that through high school. Then when I graduate I want to be a psychologist and went to college for that. Met my husband, quit college and had 6 kids, like you :)

Now, as you are, I'm happy being my kids mom and my husbands wife. When my 4 year old hits school next year I will finish my degree, but even if I never counsel one person I have my purpose. I'm raising the next generation of politicians, or goat herders or policemen and when I die and God asks me what I did to take care of the 6 gifts He gave, I'll say the best I could :)

  3. Motherhood is wonderful and grandmotherhood is as well.
I wanted to be a veterinarian, I became a nurse, a wife, a mother, and now I'm a SAH grandmother. I have to say this is the most fulfilling role I've ever had.
You have such a big and beautiful family, yo are so blessed.

  8. I had so many other dreams and I NEVER wanted to be a teacher. I studied and worked in other fields before I cam to my senses and realised that I was born to be a teacher all along...and a mum.
In my fantasy life though, I dreamed of being a dancer (I am a klutz) and an artist (a student once thought a hat I drew was a tortoise)
Thanks for stopping by my blog - I am now a follower and look forward to connecting with you.

  9. I wanted to be a vet, an artist and a writer. It's amazing how by unexpectedly adding a couple kids to the mix suddenly makes you a stay-at-home doctor, vet, (for their dog) and dozens of other occupations all in one. Add all the other dreams on it and you suddenly have your own completely-devoted fan club for your artistic work as well. ^ ^ Kids are a blessing while too many stay-at-home moms get the frown on and it hurts me every time I see it. We are unmatched masters of many professional talents in the mommy field of work.
