Crowning Moments! Hop #8

Photobucket
My Crowning Moment this week included my trusty rake and a rattlesnake. I must have gotten out of the mode for killing snakes, because when I heard the rattle and saw the big-daddy reptile slithering through the pile of extra wood laying next to the house, (the same place my kids had been playing all morning!) I sort of freaked.

My knees went a little weak and I started breathing a little faster. After I took my baby in the house and told the others to stay put until I came back, I located my rake and went snake-hunting. After 10 minutes of hitting the wood pile, trying to get the sneaky thing to rattle again, I started fearing I may have lost it. I then walked around the pile and moving slow enough that its rattles wouldn't make a sound was my mega snake. It was creepier trying to be sneaky like that than it would have been if it was trying to strike.

To make a long story short, I killed it and its nine rattles now are proudly displayed by my 9-year-old who was next in line to get some.

Needless to say, at the end of the ordeal, I had to steady my shaking legs by sitting for a spell. It was all worth it when my hubby came home and showered me with praise for a job well-done.

  1. Mrs. Cranky killed a spider the other day. She was very brave, I had a clear view of the action from the stool I was standing on.

  2. Oh my gosh!!! You're my hero!!! Snakes scare me to death...even the ones that won't cause you any harm. I am super impressed with your bravery! ;o)

  3. Melanie I can't believe how brave you are killing a rattlesnake. I think I would just grab the kids and stay indoors until the coast was clear. I'm afraid I'm only good at killing things that aren't capable of killing me - rabbits are about the biggest thing I have ever killed.

I don't really have a crowning moment this week, although I guess sticking to my guns and letting my body detox from caffeine could be a bit of a crowning moment.

  4. Wow, those are not that easy to kill. We just had a big one we missed, but that rake handle just wasn't long enough for me! I need about 10 more feet on that thing;) I didn't have any kids to protect though, so I'm sure that helped you.

I linked up our weekend Battles of The Leading Men, because they really are my end of the work week fun time. It's fun to pick the pairs, and then find the videos, and then I sit down and visit my blogging friends. It means, I've finished my tasks, and can have a little relax time:)

  5. Hi, new follower from VB. I just love your blog and the kids blogs are so cute!! I hate snakes and have only encountered a rattler once, when we were on a hike and my husband stepped on it and it almost got my daughter. Really don't want to see another one! Glad you were able to get your rattler! :)

  7. So glad your kids were safe! I don't like snakes, we dealt with them too as we lived off and on in West Texas. Thankfully someone else was always a round to take care of them though.....

  8. You are a brave woman! And I feel proud when I kill a roach or remove a little frog from my house... I once heard the sound a rattlesnake when I went hiking and ran as fast as I could.
Love the pictures of you and your family in the ranch. Great blog!

  9. Been awhile since we visited...your snake story sounds just too scarey! I've not had to deal with snakes as much as black widows and tarantulas...one of my boys caught a tarantula in a glass jar and wanted to keep it on the fridge! I DON'T THINK SO!!!

  11. OMG, you are my hero! I am so petrified of snakes (I was bitten by a copperhead when I was 7) I would have died of a panic attack right there.
