Tip of the Day: Cheap Medical Remedies

Thank you so much for the comments and feedback I got last week. We are continuing our three-part series of substitutes and home remedies. Admittedly, I haven't tried a number of them, so I hope they will work great. It's nice to have options that help us all save money while at the same time, helping us to look beautiful or, in this week's case, feel healthier. First of all, I wanted to share some of the extra tips that people added to last week's Tip of the Day.

Shanimal's Crackers shared that putting toothpaste on your pimples gets rid of them overnight.

Tracy T. recommended keeping a container of sugar in your shower and mix it with your body wash or soap to act as a body scrub. You'll be amazed at how soft, (and delicious) your skin will be.

joeh started us right in on our medical remedies with this instant cure for heartburn: combine 2 tsp. baking soda with 1/4 c. water.

For dandruff problems, pour vinegar into the hair, massage into scalp, and leave to dry for a few minutes. Wash hair. Repeat this process daily for a few days, until dandruff disappears.

Olive oil can be used on baby's dry skin. It also can be used to help with diaper rash.

Use cornstarch instead of baby powder. It's better for baby's lungs and skin - and cheaper, too.

For blisters on your feet, instead of putting the bandaid where it will come off as your feet sweat, put the bandaid inside the shoe where it is rubbing. The fabric will hold the bandaid in place and prevent future blisters.

To relieve headache pain almost immediately, drink two glasses of Gatorade.

Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Mix 1 Tbsp. horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let mixture sit for 30 minutes, and then apply it as a massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles.

For a sore throat, mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1/4 cup honey and take 1 Tbsp. six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria, and the honey soothes the throat.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms.

Get rid of toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash.

If you suffer from boils, cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine.

To speed up the healing process and reduce the blueness of bruises, soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour.

For arthritis pain, mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute. Cool slightly and apply the mixture to your hands, or wherever the pain may be.

Save on costly veterinary bills with the following home remedies:

Eliminate ear mites by applying a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's or dog's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days.

To kill fleas instantly, add a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations.

For dog odor caused by your dog getting wet, wipe down your pet with a dryer sheet, instanly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

If you have any remedies for making us feel better, look better, live healthier, or just save money, let me know!

  1. Love all the home remedies! I have one for you. If you have ants, put out cornmeal they will eat it but they can't digest it and they die. Takes longer than using chemicals but works.

  2. To cure depression, take a shot glass of scotch twice an hour, five times a day. Continue for the rest of your life;

or firmly grab your bootstraps and pull upward with great force one time.

  7. Great tips! I had heard of most of them before. The alka-seltzer one actually works if you catch it in time. The bandaid blister one was very smart!! Hadn't heard that one.
